Main Pool Filter

Main Pool Filter

The main pool filter needs to be backwashed when there is a difference of 10 PSI or more between the influent and effluent meters. To backwash the main pool filter, follow these steps in order.

  1. Turn off the pool heater and wait for 30 minutes for it to cool

  2. Turn off the Chemtrol 250 and the pool pump

  3. Close the main drain valve, the skimmer valve, and the pump valve. Make note of the positions that each valve handle was in and return to that spot after cleaning the pump basket

  4. Open the lid of the pump using the plastic mallet. Be sure not to lose the gasket

  5. Remove the pump basket and dispose of as much debris as possible

  6. Put the basket back in the pump, tighten the lid, and return all valves back to their original position

  7. On the filter, remove the pin keeping the large handle in place and move the handle into the down position

  8. Turn on the pump

  9. Watch the eye glass - this should get cloudy/dirty and then return to clear. Once the eye glass is clear, turn off the pump

  10. Return the filter handle to the upright position and lock it in with the pin

  11. Turn on the pump, the Chemtrol 250, and the heater

The floor drain will likely begin backing up before you're able to fully clear the site glass. If the floor drain starts to flood the pump room, turn off the pump immediately and return the filter handle to the upright position.

If you didn't see the eye glass return to clear, then repeat the backwashing process after the floor drain has drained all the water.
